Yuzana Alinn Grade 1 classroom with engaged students

Grade 1 Program

Our Grade 1 program at Yuzana Alinn Private School builds upon the foundation established in Kindergarten, introducing students to more structured learning while maintaining a nurturing and engaging environment. This pivotal year marks the beginning of formal elementary education, where children develop essential academic skills that will serve as building blocks for future learning.

In Grade 1, students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Our comprehensive curriculum emphasizes foundational literacy and numeracy skills while fostering critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and social development. We recognize that each child learns differently, so our experienced teachers employ diverse teaching strategies to ensure every student can succeed.

Our Grade 1 classrooms are designed to be stimulating learning environments where children feel safe to explore, ask questions, and take intellectual risks. With a low student-to-teacher ratio, we ensure that each child receives the individual attention they need to thrive academically and socially during this important developmental stage.

Curriculum Highlights

Our Grade 1 curriculum is carefully structured to build upon the foundational skills introduced in Kindergarten while preparing students for the increasing academic demands of elementary education. We integrate subject areas whenever possible to help students make meaningful connections across disciplines.

  • Language Arts: Phonics instruction, sight word recognition, reading fluency and comprehension, handwriting development, grammar basics, and creative writing.
  • Mathematics: Number sense to 100, addition and subtraction strategies, place value, measurement, time, money, and introduction to simple data analysis.
  • Science: Life cycles, weather patterns, states of matter, force and motion, and hands-on experiments that encourage observation and inquiry.
  • Social Studies: Communities, cultural diversity, map skills, historical figures, and civic responsibility.
  • Art & Music: Exploring various artistic media, color theory, rhythm, melody, and musical appreciation.

Learning Approach

Our Grade 1 program balances teacher-directed instruction with student-centered learning experiences. We incorporate a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and ensure that all students can access the curriculum in ways that work best for them.

Key elements of our approach include:

  • Differentiated Instruction: Tailoring teaching methods to meet individual student needs and learning styles.
  • Hands-on Learning: Using manipulatives and concrete materials to build conceptual understanding, especially in mathematics and science.
  • Collaborative Projects: Fostering teamwork, communication skills, and social development through group activities.
  • Technology Integration: Using age-appropriate educational technology to enhance learning and develop digital literacy.
  • Regular Assessment: Ongoing formative assessments to monitor progress and adjust instruction to meet student needs.
  • Reading Workshops: Daily dedicated time for guided reading, independent reading, and reading comprehension activities.
  • Writers' Workshop: Structured time for students to develop their writing skills through the writing process.
